CENTEX Launches After-school Music and Sports Programs 17-Jun-2011 CENTEX Launches After-school Music and Sports Programs

The Center of Excellence in Public Elementary Education (CENTEX) is part of the Tondo district in Manila. Tondo has probably the highest concentration of children in the city, but offers very few places that are suitable for safe and enjoyable after-school activities. To address this need, CENTEX recently teamed up with JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPMC) to provide resources and avenues for students to grow and learn through after-school enhancement programs.

The JPMC - CENTEX Enhancement Program in music and sports aims to provide students with a well-rounded education, where the students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities designed to reinforce classroom lessons, help children discover their talents, and give the them opportunities to apply their skills in a real-world context.

Launched last June 17, the After Hours Music Program offers free violin and cello lessons to 24 primary grades students, and rondalla class to sixth grade students. Premiere Filipino violinist Alfonso 'Coke' Bolipata conducts these Friday string ensemble classes to selected CENTEX Manila students. A team of trainers from Pundaquit Virtuosi assists him in the JPMC-CENTEX classes.

Recently, the school rondalla and choir rendered an intermission number during the company's sports festival and family day at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City last September 24.Meanwhile, the sixth grade students, also supported by JPMC under CENTEX's A Class of Your Own project, are now being trained in the school's After Hours Sports Program. The program aims to help students learn new skills, build relationships, and above all, develop sportsmanship, teamwork and discipline. The sports program was launched through a sports festival among CENTEX Manila sixth graders, their parents and JPMC employees last August 27.

JPMC employees also engage in coaching the school's varsity teams in line with the company's employee volunteerism program headed by Patricia Anne Javier-Gutierrez, Romil Camacho and Louiela Young.
