  What is CENTEX?

The Center of Excellence in Public Elementary Education (CENTEX) is a public school learning environment where bright children from economically disadvantaged families receive quality education and the necessary support to give them the opportunity for a better life.

Elementary Schools

CENTEX operates two public schools-- one in Tondo, Manila and another in Bauan, Batangas. CENTEX believes in improving the physical, financial and human resources of an ordinary public school and seeks a model for private and government partnership. The schools operate by virtue of a Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of Education and Ayala Foundation, Inc. Since its inception in 1998, CENTEX has graduated 634 students from both schools. Enrollment for school year 2009-2010 is 951.

Partner High Schools

In 2005, AFI determined that the initial investment in education could bear more fruit by supporting CENTEX graduates with high school scholarships. Thus, it established the Dreamcatcher Program, also known as the Mercedes McMicking Scholarship Fund, to raise funds for high school scholarships.  The sponsors’ pledges go far in providing high school tuition scholarships for CENTEX graduates in partner high schools, such as Sta. Isabel College (Manila) and St. Bridget College (Batangas). For school year 2009-2010, a total of 170 students are supported by the program. Another 42 students from the first batch of scholars have graduated from high school.

College Assistance

CENTEX undertakes the effort to shepherd high school seniors through the college admissions process by organizing a college orientation program, coordinating with various colleges and universities in the Manila area to waive test fees for them and provide scholarships for qualified students. In 2009, all 55 students comprising the first batch of CENTEX students to graduate from high school were offered admission to undergraduate programs in various schools in Manila.

With shared goals for the younger generation, the two schools and the Ayala Foundation believe that their partnership can help make a more just, peaceful and empowered society in the years to come.
